HOSPITAL BY THE SEA

Given its current appearance, you’d be surprised to learn that nearly a century ago, this place was a jewel in the Victorian healthcare crown: an orthopaedic children’s hospital that pioneered the development of paediatric rehabilitation. Fast forward forty years, and the facility pivoted to aged care. More recently, the expansive grounds became the local council’s administrative offices.

Then disaster: sold to developers just before COVID arrived. Unable to build and then left without a tenant, the huge site was predictably vandalised, copper stripped and graffitied, its grounds becoming increasingly overgrown and unkempt. Now to its final role: community eye-sore, a set of architectural husks residing on prime land, and yet surrounded by multi-milliion dollar mansions with absolute beach frontage.

Still worthy of photos? Most definitely!
