THE CEMENT WORKS
Now demolished, these concrete silos had been a major part of Geelog's landscape for over fifty years. Complete with its own quarry and branch train line, what you see here is what remains of an industrial site that itself dated back to the 1890s.
In 2020, the well-known street artist RONE illustrated three of the silos to celebrate the local community and its past, present and future: Corrina Eccles - descendent of Queen of the Wadawarrung and traditional owner; Cor Horsten - who had a 35 year career at the cement works; and Kelly Cartwright OAM - Paralympic dual gold medal winner. As with all of Rone's work, it was designed to be seen for a strictly limited time and indeed, with the site's demolition in 2021, everything was gone forever...
