B.U.R.P. DRAIN
The Big Underground Round Pipe was built for extremes: a colossal stormwater tunnel designed to handle floodwaters on a once-in-a-century scale. Short in length but enormous in diameter, the drain feels less like infrastructure and more like a buried concrete reactor hidden beneath the suburbs.
Its perfect circular form swallows light and perspective alike. Reflections ripple across the invert, graffiti curves endlessly around the walls, and tiny human figures disappear against the overwhelming scale of the pipe itself.
Equal parts engineering and absurdity, BURP remains one of Melbourne’s most iconic underground spaces - oversized, echoing, and impossible to photograph just once...
