Hidden beneath a major freeway, this enormous drain feels less like stormwater infrastructure and more like an underground motorway.

Vast concrete lanes stretch into darkness beneath a ceiling of repeating beams, reflections gliding across the floor like phantom traffic.

Colossal in scale and almost industrially symmetrical, the drain earned its nickname honestly: The Big Bastard.

Part aircraft hangar, part subterranean freeway, The Autobahn is one of Melbourne’s most imposing underground spaces - a hidden megastructure built not for people, but for water in motion.
